Former Monticello Mayor Milton Roberts died on July 26. He was 86 years
old.
Roberts was a decorated World War II veteran. He was wounded during his
service in the U.S. Army and received the Purple Heart.
After his service in the war, Roberts was elected as Wayne County Clerk
and served in that position from 1946 until 1950.
Roberts was well-known throughout the community, as a businessman and
also as a mail carrier.
He and his wife, Doris, operated Downtown Supermarket, which later
became Pic-Pac after it moved to the Tradeway Shopping Center.
Roberts served as Mayor of Monticello from 1989 through 1993. He also
served the city as a councilman after being appointed in 2000 to complete
the term of the late Brook Gibson.
Roberts was born June 13, 1924, the son of the late Hobart Roberts and
Lela (Brown) Roberts Cross. He was united in marriage with Doris Cooper
Roberts, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by one son, Howard Wallace Roberts, of Glenview, Ill.,
one daughter, Wanda Darwin of Abingdon, Md., five grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by a sister, Mary Lou Crabtree.
Funeral services for Roberts were held on Friday, July 30 at the First
Baptist Church.
Burial was in the Elk Spring Cemetery.
