Paul Bates, former Wayne County Jailer, Monticello policeman, Wayne County Sheriff and a member of Monticello City Council, died on Wednesday, January 29. He was 81 years old.
Bates had a law enforcement career that spanned more than 40 years.
He began as a police officer in 1956 and later became Chief of Police for the city.
Bates was elected Wayne County Sheriff in 1970 and then returned to the police department after his term expired.
He remained an officer with the department until he was elected Wayne County Jailer in 1994.
After retiring as jailer, Bates continued to serve his community as a two-term member of Monticello City Council. He completed his last term on the council in 2010.
"Paul was someone who always had the best interest of our community at heart," stated Monticello Mayor Jeffrey Edwards. "Through his service with the Monticello Police Department and his years on the city council, Paul helped to make Monticello a better place. He will be greatly missed."
Bates is survived by his wife, Josephine; three children, Lisa Perkins, Larry Bates and Obie Bates; and a stepson, Chris Jones.
Funeral services for Bates were held on Saturday, February 2. Burial was in the Elk Spring Cemetery.
