Wayne County's jobless rate increased by nearly half a percent from June to July, according to the latest figures released by the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training.
The local unemployment rate was 12 percent in July, up from 11.6 percent in June. In July 2009 the unemployment rate in Wayne County was 13.5 percent.
In the Lake Cumberland area, the unemployment rate in July was 11.1 percent, up from 10.5 percent in June. In July 2009, the area's unemployment rate was 11.7 percent.
The highest rate in the 10-county area was 14.4 percent which was recorded in McCreary County. The lowest rate was 8 percent which was recorded in Clinton County.
Other area rates were: Adair County, 10.2 percent; Casey County, 10.7 percent; Cumberland County, 9.8 percent; Green County, 12.7 percent; Pulaski County, 10.7 percent; Russell County, 10.1 percent; and Taylor County, 11.9 percent.
Boyd County recorded the state's lowest unemployment rate at 7.7 percent. It was followed by: Fayette and Oldham counties, 7.8 percent; Calloway County, 7.9 percent; and Clinton County, 8 percent.
Magoffin County recorded the state's highest unemployment rate at 18.1 percent. It was followed by: Jackson County, 16.2 percent; Metcalfe County, 15.5 percent; Menifee County, 15.4 percent; and Wolfe County, 14.1 percent.
Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled to measure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian labor force statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians who are actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians who have not looked for employment within the past four weeks.
