Monticello — Monticello City Council met in regular session on Monday evening and authorized the fire department to apply for Assistance to Firefighters Grant
(AFG) funding.
Fire Chief Steve Ferrell noted that the department was awarded $64,470 in funding in the 2009 AFG cycle. The city will provide a five percent match that will put the total project at $67,863.
Ferrell told council members that the fire department will use the 2009 grant funding to replace aging rescue equipment.
The council heard comments from Mayor Kenneth Catron, who addressed several ongoing projects in the city. He noted that the streetscaping project is coming along well and there have been few complaints..
He pointed out that another downtown project is about ready to begin.
Bids were slated to be opened this week for the wall that will be constructed on South Main Street to replace the area over town creek that is now fenced with chain link.
Catron also noted the city and the county have plans to host a ceremony later this month to honor Vietnam veterans. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, March 27 at 10 a.m. at the Doughboy statue in downtown Monticello.
He encouraged everyone to come out and participate in the event.
Before concluding his remarks, Catron noted that Senture, the new call center located on KY 90 west of Monticello, is up and running and is continuing to hire full and part-time employees. He said that anyone interested in a job at Senture must now apply online.
