Fiscal Court members approve sheriff¹s and clerk¹s financial reports
Monticello — Wayne County Fiscal Court met in regular session on Thursday, February
18 and approved the financial reports for the calendar year for the
Sheriff¹s Office and the Clerk¹s Office.
The Sheriff¹s Office reported excess fees of $67,288.15 for 2009. The
Wayne County Clerk¹s Office reported excess fees of $26,168.47 from October
23 through December 31, 2009. October 23 marked the first business day for
the office after Interim Clerk Josephine Gregory was appointed.
Any financial records prior to that date were removed from the office,
when former County Clerk Melissa Turpin resigned. County Attorney Lee Tobbe
noted that at this point the county has not received any information about
excess fees prior to October 23.
Tobbe indicated that information would not be available until an audit
of those records is completed.
Also during the meeting, the court heard an update regarding the
courthouse renovation project. County Judge-Executive Greg Rankin noted that
the project is moving along well and is slated to be completed by mid-May,
weather permitting.
Rankin said that a lot of the tile has been installed on the walls and
floors. The doors have been replaced and currently windows are being
replaced.
Rankin added that framing has begun for the cornice that will be placed
on the outside of the building.
This marked the first meeting for District Two Magistrate Jeffrey
Dishman, who was appointed to the seat and will complete the term of his
father. Dishman was appointed to the Buildings and Grounds Committee, the EZ
Industrial Development Authority, the Monticello-Wayne County Fire
Committee, and the Monticello-Wayne County Park Board.
In other action, the court:
€ Approved a transfer from the general fund to the jail fund as needed
and as budgeted.
€ Heard a monthly report from Wayne County Jailer Ray Upchurch, who
noted that the current population at the Detention Center is 170, which
includes 78 county inmates and 92 state inmates. Upchurch noted that the
county has billed a total of $83,487.30 for the month of January for housing
inmates.
€ Heard a monthly report from Wayne County Solid Waste Coordinator Tim
Bell who noted that white goods had been picked up at 47 households last
month. The county has received a $21,341.25 grant to help clean up 12 small
dump sites countywide, according to Bell.
€ Wayne County EMS Director Bubby Corder noted that the ambulance
service has answered a total of 422 calls since January 1. For the month of
January the total calls were 265. Corder noted that communication has been
positive regarding their $49,000 grant application for power lift cots, and
they expect that the funding will be awarded.
