Monticello Independent School CATS scores improve

Monticello — Monticello elementary, middle and high school scores on the Commonwealth Account-ability Testing System (CATS) continue to improve. The latest round of scores were released by the Kentucky Department of Education last week.

The biggest jump in scores were at the elementary level, where reading went from 86.9660 to 91.2453 and math increased from 74.8075 to 81.1271.

Writing portfolios for elementary students went from 80.8460 to 87.2720.

Middle school showed improvement in reading and a more than 15 point jump in practical living/vocational studies. Those scores improved from

71.1278 to 86.4929.

Monticello High School increased writing on demand scores by an impressive 20 points.

School officials noted that the scores reflect that Monticello Elementary School, Monticello Middle School and Monticello High School are progressing toward their target goals to be achieved by 2014.

"I am pleased with the gains we have made," stated Monticello Principal Johnny Chaplin. "We want to thank all the students, teachers, and staff for all their hard work in achieving these improvements."

CATS is designed to improve teaching and student learning in Kentucky.

CATS includes the Kentucky Core Content Test, writing portfolios, and prompts alternate assessments for students with severe to profound disabilities, the ACT, PLAN, and non-academic components.
