The City of Monticello has been awarded a $1 million Community Develop-ment Block Grant (CDBG) for Phase II of the Scattered Site Housing Project.
Council members learned about the grant award during Monday night's meeting.
Phase II of the project includes 13 homes, according to Monticello Mayor Jeffrey Edwards. Twelve will be new construction and one will be a rehab project.
The City of Monticello will contribute $10,000 to the project.
During Monday's meeting, the council approved several resolutions related to the project. They also approved Kris Lowery and Associates as the administrative consultant for the project.
Also during the meeting, the council approved a resolution showing their support for a new veterans hospital that would be located in the 5th Congressional District.
The group, Citizens for Veterans Heath Care, have collected more than 57,000 signatures in support of a new VA Hospital in the district.
Cities and counties across the district are being asked to voice
their support for the effort.
City Councilman Alvin Sexton told fellow council members that the Wayne County School District is working weekly to update their safety
plan, in the wake of the recent incidents of school violence.
He requested that the Monticello Police Department make plans to
visit the campus, tour through the buildings and become more familiar
with the area, as part of the effort.
In other action during the meeting, the council:
• Approved a resolution in support of the recommended legislative
changes to the county employees retirement system.
City employees fall under the plan.
• Were reminded of the chili supper that will be held Saturday,
February 16 at the National Guard Armory in support of the local unit.
The chili supper will begin at 5 p.m. and entertainment will be
provided by Sage Knoll.
