1-30-13 —
The Wayne County Cardinals hosted the Monticello Trojans on Tuesday, January 22 in a matchup between the two 48th District teams. The two teams had met in December, with Wayne County winning that contest by a score of 98-35.
In last Tuesday's contest, the Cards used a good first half to take the big lead on the way to an 80-29 win.
"Tonight was a good opportunity for a lot of guys to get playing time with 9 of the 11 guys that we played getting in the scoring column," said Wayne County Coach Rodney Woods.
Wayne County led 22-3 at the end of the first quarter and was up
45-13 at intermission. The Cards led 69-20 at the end of the third quarter and took the win.
Wayne County was led in scoring by freshman Corey Stearns with 21 points. Junior Jason Perkins added 17 points and sophomore Peyton Woods scored 16.
The Cardinals connected on 26 of 65 from the field for 40 percent.
They hit 8 of 30 3-pointers for 26 percent and were 20 of 22 from the fee throw line for 90 percent.
The Trojans were led in scoring by junior Travis Edwards with 11 points. Edwards was 3 of 4 from the field for Monticello and 5 of 6 from the free throw line.
Daniel Bertram scored 7 points for the Trojans.
Monticello hit 9 of 26 from the field for 34 percent. They were 1 of
6 on 3-pointers for 16 percent and hit 10 of 11 from the free throw line for 90 percent.
Wayne County had 26 rebounds compared to 23 for the Trojans. The Cards were led on the boards by Logan Gardner with 6.
Monticello was led in rebounding by Edwards with 11.
The Cardinals committed 3 turnovers. Monticello had 33 turnovers in the game.
Both teams had important district games on the schedule for Friday night. The Cards were set to host Southwestern and Monticello was set to host McCreary Central. But icy weather early Friday wreaked havoc with those schedules as both games were postponed.
Monticello will make up that contest on Thursday, January 31 at home. No makeup date has been set for the Wayne County-Southwestern game.
