2-6-13 —
The Wayne County Cardinals traveled to McCreary Central on Friday, February 1 for an important 48th District matchup. The Cards were coming off a good road win at Clinton County earlier in the week, while the Raiders had defeated Rockcastle County on Tuesday night.
The game marked the 94th meeting between the two schools. It marked the second time they have met this season. The first meeting was in December when Wayne County won 72-41.
In last week's game, the Cardinals scored 24 points in the second quarter to take a double digit lead then cruised in the final two quarters as they won 91-59.
"This is a good district win that gives us at least a share of first place in the seeding," said Wayne County Coach Rodney Woods. "It was a big night for point guard Trey Blevins with 11 assists and 11 points."
The Cardinals led by 4 points, 22-18, at the end of the first quarter. Wayne County was up by 12, 46-34, at the half. In the third quarter, the Cards scored 26 points while holding the Raiders too only 12 points. Wayne County led 72-46 going into the final quarter, which gave several younger members of the team a chance to get varsity minutes.
The Cardinals were led in scoring by freshman Corey Stearns with 23 points and freshman Peyton Woods with 22 points.
The Cardinals connected on 31 of 62 from the field for 50 percent.
They were 9 of 21 on 3-pointers for 42 percent and hit 20 of 27 from the free throw line for 74 percent.
The Raiders were led in scoring by Tyler Strunk with 22 points. Josh Gregory added 11 points.
McCreary Central connected on 21 of 48 from the field for 43 percent. They were 3 of 14 on 3-pointers for 21 percent and hit 14 of
21 from the free throw line for 66 percent.

The Cards had only 6 turnovers in the game, compared to 19 for McCreary Central.
With the win, Wayne County improved to 19-4 on the season. Next up was a Tuesday night contest at Somerset.
"We have a big week coming up with a game at Somerset on Tuesday, then a big make-up game with Southwestern on Wednesday, then parents night on Friday night at home with West Jessamine," said Woods.
