Cardinals defeat East Jessamine 64-61

Monticello — The Wayne County Cardinals played at East Jessamine High School on

Saturday, February 13. The Cards had dropped a tough loss the evening before

at West Jessamine and were looking to get back on the winning track.

This game marked the fifth meeting between the two schools, with Wayne

County leading the series 4-1. The two teams last met in February 2009 when

Wayne County won 68-52.

The Cards trailed late in this contest, but came back to claim a 64-61

win over the Jaguars.

³We made a nice comeback in the last three minutes,² said Wayne County

coach Rodney Woods. ³Trailing by seven, we had a big steal and made the

defensive stops we needed.²

Wayne County trailed by 3 points, 21-18, at the end of the first

quarter. Things were knotted at 31 at the half.

The Jaguars had the scoring edge in the third quarter and led 52-50

going into the final eight minutes. East Jessamine built a late 7 point

advantage before Wayne County came back to take the victory.

The Cards were led by junior forward Austin Shearer with 25 points.

Shearer hit 9 of 16 from the field and was 2 of 3 on 3-pointers.

Junior forward Gavin Dunagan turned in a solid performance, going 6 of

10 from the field and 4 of 7 from the free throw line to finish with 16

points. Dunagan led Wayne County¹s rebounding effort with 14.

Kyle Hopper finished with 13 points. He led Wayne County in assists with

4 and in steals with 3.

Wayne County hit 26 of 49 from the field for 53 percent. They were 4 of

11 on 3-pointers for 36 percent and 8 of 15 from the charity stripe for 53

percent.

East Jessamine was led by Michael Rexroat with 25 points. Kyle Lamb

added 12 points.

The Colts hit 21 of 55 for 38 percent. They were 10 of 24 from beyond

the arc for 41 percent and 9 of 13 from the free throw line for 69 percent.

The Cardinals won the battle of the boards 35-29. Wayne County had 15

turnovers compared to 13 for the Colts. With the win, Wayne County improved

to 18-8 on the season.

³We need to build on the positive things that happened tonight,² said

Woods.
