12th Region All A Tournament Trojans lose heartbreaker to Burgin
Monticello — It was a great effort on Monday, January 18, as the Monticello Trojans
battled Burgin to the wire in the semifinal round of the All A 12th Region
Tournament, which was played at Somerset High School. But the Trojans came
up short, 56-54, in the overtime contest.
"It was a tough loss for our team," said Monticello coach Trevis
Upchurch. "We played hard and we competed well. We just came up on the short
end."
The Trojans trailed early in the game and were down 18-11 at the stop.
Monticello cut the advantage to 5, 32-27, by halftime.
Burgin led 41-34 going into the final quarter, but Monticello rallied to
take a lead late in the contest. Trenton Claunch scored with nine seconds
left in the fourth quarter to knot it at 52 and force the overtime.
The Trojans scored only two points in the overtime, while Burgin scored
4 to hang on for the win.
"With a game like this there are numerous possessions that change a
game," said Upchurch. "We didn't shoot well from the line and that hurt, but
I was proud of our team.
Monticello was led by Derrick Peyton with a game-high 24 points. Austin
Foster added 17 points for the Trojans and Chase Lowe chipped in 9.
Monticello hit 20 of 36 on two-point attempts for 55 percent. They were
3 of 14 from beyond the arc for 21 percent and struggled from the charity
stripe, hitting only 5 of 12 for 41 percent.
The Bulldogs were led by Claunch's 17 points. Logan Hill scored 12
points.
Burgin shot 41 percent on two point attempts, hitting 13 of 31. The
Bulldogs were 6 of 9 on 3-pointers for 66 percent and hit 12 of 22 from the
free throw line for 54 percent.
With the win, Burgin advanced to Friday night's championship game
against Danville.
Next up for the Trojans is a game at McCreary Central on Friday, January
29. See next week's edition for game details.
