MHS to honor 1960 state runner-up Trojans Dec. 4
Monticello — When the Monticello Trojans open their home basketball season on December 4 against Jackson County, fans will have an opportunity to honor the accomplishments of the Trojan Team of 1960.
Players from that state runner-up squad have been invited back to the school for the game and will be recognized, according to Monticello boys basketball coach Trevis Upchurch.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the team's state tournament run.
They lost to Flaget 65-56 in the state championship game.
"We couldn't think of a better way to start our season than by honoring these men who made it farther than any team in Monticello history," said Upchurch.
Team members included: Gene Pendleton, Butch Kennedy, Don Frye, Paul Frye, Jimmy Frazer, Henderson Eads, Jr., Junior Peyton, Kay Morris, Sam Keith, Jimmy Duncan, Jack Edwards, and Wendell Parris. Team managers were Johnny Phillips and Steve Daulton. The team was coached by Joe Harper.
Anyone with contact information for 1960 team members should get in touch with Upchurch at the school.
