The Monticello Trojans traveled to Sayre on Tuesday, January 29 to take on the Spartans. The Trojans were coming off a loss the previous week to district rival Wayne County, while Sayre came into the game with a recent loss to Bryan Station.
Despite shooting 51 percent from the field and placing three scorers in double figures, the Trojans dropped an 82-54 loss to the Spartans.
Monticello trailed 19-8 at the end of the first quarter. Sayre scored 22 points in the second stanza and pushed out to a 64-33 lead by halftime.
Sayre had built a 64-33 cushion by the end of the third quarter on the way to the win.
Monticello was led in scoring by Travis Edwards with 13 points.
Edwards hit 5 of 10 from the field and was 2 of 4 from the free throw line.
Aaron Sexton scored 11 points for the Trojans. Sexton was 4 of 9 from the field. Trajan Smith finished with 10 points.
Monticello connected on 19 of 37 from the field for 51 percent. They were 6 of 13 on 3-pointers for 46 percent and hit 10 of 17 from the free throw line for 58 percent.
The Spartans were led in scoring by senior center Ray Brewer who had a game-high 35 points.
Monticello grabbed a total of 20 rebounds in the game. They were led on the boards by Edwards with 10 rebounds.
The Trojans were led in assists by Elijah Catron and Logan Brett with 3 each. Brett led the Trojans in steals with 3.
Monticello committed 26 turnovers in the contest.
With the loss Monticello dropped to 1-19 on the season. Sayre improved to 4-13.
Next up for Monticello was a Friday night contest against Cumberland County.
